Social media and news organizations are offering suggestions on how to cope with social distancing. Recommendations include watching TV, exercise, listen to music, do video chats and so on. I believe that something as gone unmentioned: spirituality. Therefore, I like to offer a different coping tool to mitigate social distancing: nurturing faith. (As a Catholic, my spiritual perspective is different from other spiritual practices. However, the principle is ecumenical).
A healthy community is one that avoids the pitfalls of extreme physical isolation: paranoia. God created us to be in communion with each other. However, these days of social distancing are forcing us to change how we interact as a community. Though proper, social distancing, if unchecked, can damage our sense of humanity and divinity by breaching our need to socialize and pray as one.
Our community is experiencing social distancing, and it should also experience nurturing faith. How do we do that? Here are my seven suggestions. You can try one per day. 1) Take 1-5 minutes a day to be thankful for all the blessings in your life. 2) Pray for our political leaders that they put the common good ahead of their ambitions. 3) Pray for our family, our friends, and our neighbors. 4) Call those who are lonely, sick, or in need. Ask, “how are you doing? Is there anything I can do for you? 5) Be patient and kind to each other. 6) Encourage and invite others to join us in nurturing faith as appropriate and 7) Heed St. Paul’s words: “Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” (Rom 12:12).
In Psalm 133:1, we find this beautiful truth about nurturing faith: “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”
