Today’s Supreme Court decisions and last night’s successful effort by Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) to momentary defeat abortion restrictions in Texas are opportunities for Christian hope, compassion, forgiveness, unity, and prayer.
It is during these situations that we must “be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” (1 Peter 3:15) I believe that the ultimate decision on these matters is in God’s hands.
Today’s events are an opportunity to persevere in our faith. We must remain strong believers through compassion and forgiveness. “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with your malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.” (Ephesians 4:26; 31-32)
If you are affronted by these events, find strength and comfort in unity. “If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing.” (Philippians 2:1-2)
Finally, let’s pray for those who disagree with our values. “I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:2-3)
